The Moon
Earth only has one moon and it is the only place that humans set foot on beyond Earth so far. The moon is the brightest and largest object in our sky and is Earth's only natural satellites and is the fifth largest moon in the solar system.
Lunar Facts
Moon Phases
There are 8 lunar phases which are a result of the moon's orbit and rotation. In order they are new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full Moon, waning gibbous, third quarter and waning crescent.
Eclipses
There are 2 types of eclipses: lunar and solar. During a lunar eclipse the sun and moon are on opposite sides of the Earth. During a solar eclipse the sun and moon are on the same side of the Earth and the moon blocks out the sun.
Formation
The theory is that roughly 4.5 billion years ago a Mars sized object collided with the Earth and the resulting debris came together and created the moon.
